The Mother Tongue

I’ve been busy setting up the website and fiddling behind the scenes for The Mother Tongue, an event by Digital Parents birth momma Brenda (who seem to have some sort of ADHD because she can’t stop creating new events for bloggers). I was supposed to be one of the speakers but I had to pull out because we’re moving houses again. I think it’s going to be an awesome night, so buy your tickets now!

Logitech boom box

Mother’s day came early this year! Logitech’s UE Boombox is a great Mother’s Day gift for the gadget mums out there like me. It’s a fantastic lightweight Bluetooth speaker that lets you use your smartphone or tablet to play and control music from up to 50 feet away. Great solid sound, so much so that hubby’s been hogging it since it arrived (RRP $299.95).

Bosisto’s Eucalyptus oil saves my table

I had no idea that the Bosisto’s Eucalyptus oil has the power to erase the paint on my daughter’s play table that I haven’t had the power to clean up in years. I tried nail polish remover but it almost took out the white paint! See the before and after photos yourself. I needed to clean it up so I can repaint it. Now I can!

Pixar short films

Pixar’s latest short films are on DVD and they are absolutely awesome. I had no idea they had several of these things. I only saw La Luna before the Brave screening ages ago and that one was really good too especially on 3D. My favourite in this DVD is the Day and Night out, brilliant concept. It’s worth watching and getting.

Writing course

I’m about to finish my online course at the Australian Writers’ Centre. Even after how many years in the industry, I still got heaps of information from the Magazine and Newspaper writing course. I’m definitely doing the second course later this year. Valerie Khoo and Allison Tait are really helpful. I’ve never done an online course before but this one is easy to do and very interactive. One thing I do want to tell anyone thinking of doing the course is that they should maximise the QnA section. Ask the teacher! That’s what it’s like in a real classroom so make the most of it!

The Giveaway insanity

I know you’ve seen the giveaway overdrive here and I’m so glad you continue to support it. I committed to several projects before DPCON13 and I’ve been trying to have them all done after the craziness of the conference. I have more to come though so keep watching this space!

We’re going to the race!

Tassie Devils and a Disney afternoon

disney live

The start of the year has been hectic to say the least. I have calluses in my hand from cleaning up the house after coming back from the holidays. Plus, the deadlines are back (yay and nay because school doesn’t start for another week!).

But lining up some kiddie activities before we left was a great idea as it gave my little one something to look forward to, instead of just “assisting” me with chores.

First off was the Wildlife Park Sydney visit to see the latest addition to their family – the Tasmanian devils. I love these little creatures, they are cute but can also chew through bone! Awesome. Unfortunately, they are saying that in 25 years or less, these little animals could be extinct in the wild because of a contagious cancer.

The zoo has a breeding program for these little cuties and I’m hoping that on our next visit, they will come out to say hi (they found a way to bury underground away from the viewing window while we were there).

Even so, Mini K had a blast looking at the other animals during the show and meeting Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. They’ll be appearing daily at the zoo from 13 – 19 January between 10am-1pm. I’ve watched that show – it has something for the kids and the adults – such a bizarre but entertaining concept. (And there was a giant duck toy at Darling Harbour too, a real WTF moment).

The next day, Mini K went to Mickey’s Rockin Road Show with me and our friends for an afternoon of fun. Although she still had a bit of cough, she was very much into the show – standing up, dancing around, bouncing around. They loved every bit of it. I especially loved the Tigger dance when they threw giant balls to the crowd. It was a great party for the kids. The show will be touring Sydney until the 13th of January. To get tickets, go to their Disney Live website.

I promise to post more soon. I’ve written many pages of blog entries. Just been so knackered, as usual. Hope you all had a good start to your year!

Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show

Mickey and Minnie DL5 Final

I’m looking forward to the Disney Live! Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show next year with MiniMe. We saw Disney on Ice for the first time ever with friends and my MIL and it was fantastic. I never went to any of those shows as a kid so I’m probably as excited as she is. If not, more!

The show is touring in 13 cities across Australia from the 28th of December until the 24th of February. Aside from the Mickey gang, the Toy Story friends will also be there along with Tigger and Cinderella and more!

Tickets are on sale now!

Everything happens at the same time

  • We weren’t supposed to be moving yet because both houses we applied for declined our application. So we were looking forward to a relaxing visit from my stepson and MIL. Instead, we got a call back from one of the agents to say we actually got the house and we can move in two weeks. Then a couple of days later, the second house agent called to say we got the other house too. So that was that.
  • My MIL and stepson got stuck helping us with the move – a double-edged sword. On one hand it was good to have extra help. On the other hand, it was stressful feeding extra people while doing house moves and trying to ensure that they got to do enjoyable things as well and not just house moving (which wasn’t easy because it’s really hard to function in a house that’s not really done unpacking).
  • I finished a bottle of Jack Daniels Honey. Well, not really. Maybe 50 per cent of it. Or 65 per cent. Something like that.
  • It was also that time of the month and since I forgot to take my non psychotic PMS tablets, I was going ballistic on hubby every couple of seconds.
  • MiniMe got sick on top of my lingering cough, all while moving houses.
  • The cleaners for the old house didn’t know what they were doing and destroyed the oven because they used the wrong stuff to clean it. You’d think cleaners know what they’re doing eh?
  • My stepson had to go back to Perth for a couple of days after he got here for his holiday because someone in his extended family died in her sleep. (I mean, really? Really universe?!)
  • Hubby’s work called him to say he needed to do a two-day training in Melbourne because there was no other schedule for it. So he had to leave me, MiniMe, MIL, and his son to fend for ourselves in the middle of an unpacked house – with three people coughing and sniffly. There wasn’t a thing he could do.
  • Not to mention my usual deadlines and interviews.
  • At least we got to watch Ice Age 4, 3D for free and also got to see the spectacular Disney on Ice.

All in one week. Everything happens at the same time.

Big birthday weekend

brave tussauds2

It was great to have a big weekend. We don’t do that often. Although we were absolutely exhausted by Sunday night, we had such a great time – and hubby had a great weekend birthday. And more importantly, it was all free except for the date night movie and visit to Lindt.

Saturday morning was spent educating ourselves about Taronga Zoo’s Fish4Life campaign – supporting sustainable fishing so our kids can still have fish when they’re our age. I highly suggest you go to their site and read up. Plus, it was so much fun watching the Sea Lions perform and the opportunity to meet Nala.

It was pouring all day so the queue to the giraffe feeding hour wasn’t that long. We finally had the chance to feed the giraffe. Two animal encounters in one day! The little one was absolutely loving it.

Saturday night was adult night so we got a sitter and went out for dinner and a movie. Cabin the Woods is absolutely fantastic. Joss Whedon is movie god incarnate. It’s so nice to finish a movie and not go ‘WTF was that?’. We got desserts after for some adult discussion on the movie. It’s nice sometimes not having to tame your words because there are little ones around.

Sunday was spent at the movies for the exclusive premiere of Brave (in cinemas June 21). It was a great movie and it totally made me cry. Thank god it was dark and I had 3D glasses on. You know how it is — mother and daughter theme and all that – about finding your own identity despite society’s expected norm. We always love movies like that eh? I was hugging my little one so much. I highly recommend bringing tissues.

Yesterday, my daughter asked if she could learn how to do archery. Another lesson for the future – on top of karate, ice skating, piano etc.

After a nice lunch with Brenda and the kidlets, we went off to Madame Tussauds to grope Elle McPherson’s and Angelina Jolie’s boobies. We also had a family photo with US President Obama, after my brief speech with Prime Minister Julia Gillard. My little one is a huge fan of Iron Man so that was a great highlight for her.

The afternoon finished perfectly with a visit to Lindt café where hubby’s first try at the waffle was deterred by MiniMe’s fork that kept stealing it. I made Bobotie and oven puff cake for a sparkler and candlelit dinner, which ended with Kung Pow – the most ridiculous movie ever but hubby’s favourite. His birthday present was a shower radio, by the way, because his real gift was a month early (some music thing I don’t understand).

It was exhausting but absolutely fun.
