We Have It All

we have it all

we have it all

My second children’s picture book is now available on Amazon!

Yes it is a true story. This is based on our childhood in the Philippines and the premise is that no matter how little you have, no matter what kind of hardships you’re going through, there is always a brighter side to things.

It’s about our childhood years without TV, computer games, books and toys. It’s about our childhood living in a house with only half a roof and half a floor. It’s about how happy our childhood was and how we need these reminders to see the good things about our lives today.

I hope you guys like it.

The Mother Tongue

I’ve been busy setting up the website and fiddling behind the scenes for The Mother Tongue, an event by Digital Parents birth momma Brenda (who seem to have some sort of ADHD because she can’t stop creating new events for bloggers). I was supposed to be one of the speakers but I had to pull out because we’re moving houses again. I think it’s going to be an awesome night, so buy your tickets now!

Logitech boom box

Mother’s day came early this year! Logitech’s UE Boombox is a great Mother’s Day gift for the gadget mums out there like me. It’s a fantastic lightweight Bluetooth speaker that lets you use your smartphone or tablet to play and control music from up to 50 feet away. Great solid sound, so much so that hubby’s been hogging it since it arrived (RRP $299.95).

Bosisto’s Eucalyptus oil saves my table

I had no idea that the Bosisto’s Eucalyptus oil has the power to erase the paint on my daughter’s play table that I haven’t had the power to clean up in years. I tried nail polish remover but it almost took out the white paint! See the before and after photos yourself. I needed to clean it up so I can repaint it. Now I can!

Pixar short films

Pixar’s latest short films are on DVD and they are absolutely awesome. I had no idea they had several of these things. I only saw La Luna before the Brave screening ages ago and that one was really good too especially on 3D. My favourite in this DVD is the Day and Night out, brilliant concept. It’s worth watching and getting.

Writing course

I’m about to finish my online course at the Australian Writers’ Centre. Even after how many years in the industry, I still got heaps of information from the Magazine and Newspaper writing course. I’m definitely doing the second course later this year. Valerie Khoo and Allison Tait are really helpful. I’ve never done an online course before but this one is easy to do and very interactive. One thing I do want to tell anyone thinking of doing the course is that they should maximise the QnA section. Ask the teacher! That’s what it’s like in a real classroom so make the most of it!

The Giveaway insanity

I know you’ve seen the giveaway overdrive here and I’m so glad you continue to support it. I committed to several projects before DPCON13 and I’ve been trying to have them all done after the craziness of the conference. I have more to come though so keep watching this space!

What to do when someone tells you that you are a shit writer

Life has been quite challenging the last couple of months. There are other things going on in our lives, but what keeps me up at night a bit is work and finding more work.

You see, I lost a regular client after they hired a full time staff that can write the articles they usually send to freelance writers like me. That’s a lot of money gone. Like a lot.

That would have been okay had I not received a confidence-crushing email from the new editor they hired, telling me about my shitty work.

First off, let me give you my initial thoughts the first time I read his email. Everything else became blurry. What came into focus was that my writing was shitty and not worth the money I’m charging them.

I auto replied (meaning, I automatically replied without giving myself time to think and be calm) and sent out what I thought was a pretty sarcastic snappy reply to the editor. (It turns out he found it quite balanced – hahaha, I don’t even know how to be sarcastic!).

When my blood finally stopped boiling and I’ve hugged my daughter 5,000 times to calm me down, I read his email again together with the comments he placed on my latest article.

And it hit me. He was right. He was abso-freaking-lutely right.

After re-reading the email, I realised he was telling me this: he’s not a fan of my writing yet but he could be if I worked harder at it. The initial thoughts I mentioned above weren’t even written there on the email. It was my angry ego reading between the lines.

His notes were spot on and it rubbed me raw because my laziness seeped through my work. I was lazy when I wrote that article, and to be honest, probably the last two or three articles before that.

I was letting myself go, I think mainly because no one was challenging me about my work.

After that calmness sunk in, I wrote him another email – honest and true. He replied the next day saying he appreciated both my emails and that I had every right to be mad. He also said that now that the hard stuff is out of the way, we could work on the stuff that I write from now on (well, whatever else they give me anyway given I don’t have much work from them anymore).

I could have gone through a self-pity phase. I could have given up on my career (and at one point I did ask hubby if he’d be okay if I just change careers altogether – maybe start cooking or baking or sewing or something). But instead, I dusted myself off, tucked in my protruding ego and enrolled myself to a refresher course at the Australian Writers’ Centre – something that I wanted to do last year but kept putting it off.

After that, I mass emailed every single magazine I knew until I got a couple of replies that will hopefully fill in the hole that the previous publications have left gaping wide open.

Honestly, that editor could have said his piece better but I think he was trying to keep it in until he couldn’t anymore. I did tell him he should have said something earlier on before it came to a point where my articles “shortened his lifespan” (yep, I emailed that to him – pretty smart eh?).

I don’t know if I’ll hear from him again given that I don’t write for them that often anymore. But in a way, I am grateful for his email. It was the kick in the butt that I needed to zing my mojo again. I think I’m on the right track now (I’m still considering doing the cooking sideline job though).

DPCON does the Harlem Shake

I’m still recovering and trying to catch up on deadlines but here’s a clip of what parent bloggers do when you leave them unattended.

Sewing, crocheting and cooking, oh my

blinky

I’ve used my sewing machine so much the last couple of weeks that it went bonkers on me and had to be oiled.

I saw a couple of patterns I liked and decided that for this year, my Christmas presents would be handmade. I made some crochet beanies and little personalised dollies from these cute patterns I got from Blinking Flights. I added ironed on photos of the kiddies I was giving the presents to. My friend’s kids already opened their presents and they absolutely love it. I love that these toys will be placed in the keepsake box, like a time capsule for their future kids.

I also finally did something about the fact that I don’t have an apron in the house. The only one we have, for over nine years now, is a black apron with Jack Daniels on it. Not that I don’t drink JD but I would really like some girly apron too.

The solution? I made one. Well, two technically. I got a half apron panel from Spotlight and made a Christmas one. Then I just went for it and created a patchwork one from the scraps of my dolls project based on the pattern I got from Honeybear Lane.

I added some details on the pockets by using the photo to cloth transfer technique I found on A Beautiful Mess. So easy and such a great detail! I love how the tutorials out there are just so great and easy to follow.

Have I mentioned how much I love craft bloggers?

Finally, I’ve summoned up the courage to try something from the Jamie Oliver range. I never wanted to before because they are always so complex. But his 15-minute meals looked easier to handle. I bought the book and the spices (someone else was carrying the same book at the grocery too hehe) and just went for it. I was thoroughly amazed at my creations. I’m even using saffron! His 15 minutes is 30 minutes for me, but that’s still a good timeframe for cooking.

I especially love that my little one is expanding her taste buds by trying out the Jamie Oliver range. She’s eating couscous, brown rice, veggies and more. I’m even starting to introduce her to mild spicy foods. The biggest thing of all though is my homemade wholemeal bread. It is easy to make and absolutely yummy! There’s nothing like eating warm fresh bread.

Yes, I can now admit I am quite the domestic goddess. Holy crap.

Wordless Wednesday: The Grateful Edition

Dinner outside the house. Bouncy castle for her birthday. Jamie Oliver meals that turn out very well. Breakfasts out with hubby. My pretty ballerina. San churros trip. My new food processor. More Jamie Oliver meals. Making fresh wholemal bread. Free wine.

Norton 360 Multi-Device giveaway

norton

Norton’s blogger outreach taught me a lot about protecting my computer and mobile devices from identity theft, spams and so on. It was a very informative session that opened my eyes about the many ways my details could be passed on to third parties without my knowledge. The simple fact that I play games on my phone, do banking on my phone, reply to emails and use social media on my phone means I am in great risk of having my details misused.

Marian Merritt, Norton’s Internet Safety Advocate, gave several good tips about protecting yourself and your family from the online creepy crawlies. Read more about it in Digital Parents Collective.

For MummyK readers out there, here’s a chance to win the Norton 360 Multi-Device worth $149.99. It protects any combination of Macs, PCs and Android smartphones and tablets; tracks and recovers lost or stolen Android mobile devices; automatic PC backup for your music, photos, and files; and enables you to manage your protection from anywhere, right over the internet.

All you have to do is answer this in 25 words or less: What’s your tip for online safety for yourself, your family or your kids?

Australian residents only. Closes 11 December 2012.

Congratulations Clair!

Thanks to everyone who joined!

Sustaining one’s well being

SPA treatment

Health is the most important thing in life. You may have the best job in the world or earn a lot of money – if your health is in danger, you realise what is really important. In our hectic and often stressful daily life, it has become normal to forget how to relax and take care of our general well-being.

Lots of us seem unable to enjoy some tranquility and down time on our own. Instead, we end up checking our smartphones for news of any kind every five minutes or so. Add to that the pressure of managing a household, work and kids and it’s not a surprise that burnout is one of the most widespread medical phenomena.

Having some time off for yourself to really relax is essential in order to regain some strength and energy.

Give your body and mind a treat
Switching off your mobile device for a day and resist checking emails every hour is a good start. However, there is more that you can and should do in order to give yourself something good. Paying for a spa visit is one of the best things you can do. A warm and cozy atmosphere, good smells and various wellness treatments like getting a massage or relaxing in the sauna can really do wonders about one’s well-being. Also keep in mind that you can save  money by checking out websites that offer coupons to get you a good discount. Or better yet, put that on your Christmas list and let your family buy it for you!

A day or even a couple of hours of relaxation will do wonders to recharge your batteries. Caring for oneself like this gives you the strength and energy to keep up with the daily grinds of life, especially for us mums.

Things I didn’t know about cars

{Sponsored Post}

I’ve only started driving around five years ago, and even today I still don’t like it. I need the car to go from point A to point B and that’s it. I’m not one of those who want cars that go from zero to ‘holy crap’ in seconds.

Having said that, I didn’t realise just how much I didn’t know about cars when I first started using them. And even today, I still am figuring some things out. I know, right? You can mutter ‘bloody women’ under your breath, I won’t be offended.

For instance, I just realised there’s a lever under my seat to open the boot of the car. I thought I had to use the key all the time.

I also just figured out how to preset the radio in my car so I can just press a number to my favourite radio station.

Also, I didn’t realise until recently what kind of things you have to look out for to buy a new car, especially online. Aside from the price, there’s the mileage to consider, how many previous owners, what year it is and to check what accidents it’s been in online.

We’ve bought all our cars online and there were some miserable purchases in the past. Like my first car that’s killed how many kangaroos on the road with dents all over it. Granted it was cheap and I ended up scratching it even more but still, it’s safe to know these things.

Then there’s one car hubby bought ages ago that turned out to have been in a major car accident and we didn’t know because we didn’t check its details online.

But over the years, we’ve smarted up and the last car we bought, the one I’m driving now, is actually pretty good (I may or may not have spilled milk inside it a week after we bought it). It looks like a mother’s car now (you know, with crumbs, dried milk, toys and swimming paraphernalia) but it started out pretty clean.

I’m hoping to upgrade my own little one to an automatic one day (yes, I’m still driving a manual), maybe to a Citroen C4 – you know, the one that turns into a dancing robot? I wonder if it costs extra to get it to dance.

And finally, one more thing I figured out recently after conversations with female friends is that I’m not the only one who will be calling car service if I do get a flat tyre! I don’t know how to use a jack and that X thing for changing tyres. And my friends don’t now either! I don’t feel like a total ditz anymore.

What’s your latest car ‘aha’ moment?

The CEO formula

I’ve interviewed so many CEOs and successful business owners in my line of work. These are people from different industries too – from construction to earthmoving to car industry and landscaping and so on. I use the same questions on my interviews, just tweaking it a bit based on their backgrounds.

But I sometimes think I could just copy and paste some of their answers because they are so similar that it’s freaky.

Basically, from what I gathered, the formula is simple.

  • They all have very supportive partners.
  • They all have a drive and vision on what they want with their company.
  • They all have the smarts for calculated risks and caring for their money (most of these people have put their own houses up as collateral for their businesses).
  • They all say they have a hard time balancing work and family life.
  • They all say they work hard, like 6am to 6pm hard or even worse hours sometimes.
  • They all have the same passion for their industry. Like super passion, not just for the money.
  • And they all say that had it not been for their partners taking care of the home side of things, they wouldn’t have been able to do what they were able to do.

There’s a formula there. It’s quite obvious. It’s just a matter of whether or not you have it. Or if it’s something you’d want to do.
