My Day on a Plate + GIVEAWAY

dr-jo-get-lean

I had a chance to have a Skype chat with award winning nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan for the My Day on a Plate campaign with Australian Pineapples.

Australian Pineapples is a not-for-profit organisation run by Horticulture Australia that supports Aussie growers and educate people regarding the benefits of pineapple.

Anyway, did I mention I’m on Weight Watchers? I’ll write more on that later especially because I’ve lost nearly four kilos since starting this over a month ago. My talk with Joanna topped up the information I’ve started to gather on living healthier.

dr-jo-get-lean

Here’s what I got from our session:

  • Try to stick to low GI foods.
  • I can mash anything up instead of just mashed potato, which isn’t low GI. I can do sweet potato, cauliflower, carrots, peas and more, mix with some Philadelphia, garlic, spices and stuff.
  • Try to stick to wholegrain bread more than wholemeal, or try sour dough with soy linseed from your local bakery.
  • Seafood rocks (they are also very low on ProPoints with Weight Watchers).
  • Try not to eat the kids’ leftovers. It turns out when you just graze instead of eating properly you end up eating more. Also, being the family trashcan for leftover food is never good.
  • Help your kids with school readiness by structuring the day’s three meals, morning tea and afternoon tea.
  • Snacking on fruits, like pineapple, is a good thing.
  • Finally, health is not a diet. It’s a lifestyle. There’s no such thing as “I’m on a break” – something which I’m starting to learn well. I was afraid I’d gain weight during the Easter long weekend but instead I lost over half a kilo. Yay!

Now you’re turn to say yay! The good people at “My Day on a Plate” is giving away a $100 Woolies voucher to one lucky winner to help you start a healthier lifestyle.

To enter, just answer this in 50 words or less: What’s your tried and tested doable health tip? Something that would be helpful to those who are just starting this healthier lifestyle (like moi).

Australian residents only. Competition ends 22 April AEST.

Thanks everyone for joining!

Uncle Toby’s oats and Canon camcorder GIVEAWAY

Household name for oats, Uncle Toby’s, has launched the all new My Little Oats campaign stacked full of tips to pack in more during brekky and get the kiddies enjoying a nourishing breakfast.

My little one is luckily an oats girl and she enjoys her Uncle Toby’s sachets (as do I). My mum had a stroke a couple of years ago and every time I get the chance, I send a box of Uncle Toby’s oats to the Philippines because it’s one of the things allowed by the doctor for brekky. She likes the break from the normal boring oats she usually buys there.

Anyway, the new campaign will get mums to share their own experiences and tips on the site, because mummy knowledge is important to share around. There are also heaps of other stuff on the site so check them out.

The good people at Uncle Toby’s is giving away a winter’s worth of Uncle Toby’s oats and a Canon camcorder to capture those lovely, and funny, family moments.

To enter, simply tell us in 50 words or less:

What’s your best tip to make brekky time smoother and easier? (It sounds impossible but there must be a good tip out there!)

PLUS I will be picking FIVE runners up who will be getting a personalised placemat from Uncle Toby’s.

For more chances of winning, head to Uncle Toby’s and post your tips there as well. They’re giving away weekly prizes!

::::

Congratulations Rebecca Bird! You won the camcorder!

Everyone gets a code for their personalised placemats! Yay!

Australian residents only. Competition 15 April ends AEST.

Oscar Wylee Spectacular Eyeglasses GIVEAWAY

oscar wylee

I am absolutely glad to have found this company. Seriously.

I found them while I was Googling “cheap funky eyeglasses” and at first, I couldn’t believe it. I mean, they were cheaper than all of those chain places that claim to be “cheap” plus they are sooo bloody fashionable. I wanted affordable eyeglasses that didn’t make me look old.

oscar wylee

There must be a catch right? I mean, they can’t possibly be that good. Well, they bloody are. This giveaway came about as a product of my happiness after buying my first pair. I wanted to help them spread the word so I approached them to do a giveaway here.

OSCAR-WYLEE

What’s so good about them?

-Aside from being only $98 a pair (that’s including the lens), the designs are absolutely funky. I mean, just look at my photo. I thought no frame would make me look good because of my potato shaped face, but voila! They are quality designer frames too, made from the finest material (which was pretty obvious after I compared them with my old ones).

 oscar wylee

“Everything, from the design to the manufacture and the sale of our glasses is managed in-house. We sell our frames direct to you through our web store enabling you to bypass the optical shops and their high prices.”

-They have a Home Trial thing where you can pick five pairs from their site to send to you for free. You try them on, take photos, post on social media for advice, then send back to them for free once you’ve made the decision. I put mine in “sisters only” mode on Facebook but luckily, hubby and a friend was there to help me pick out my Gatsby pair. (You’ll need a credit card for this bit, just in case you don’t return it hahaha. My card wasn’t charged after I sent the home trial back so all good.)

home trial oscar wylee

home trial

-I love their One-for-One campaign where for every pair bought, they give one pair of eyeglasses to their charity partners in developing society’s like Myanmar, East Timor and The Kimberleys. I so understand this. Eyeglasses end up being a “luxury” for some people in third world countries. Believe me, I know.

Now for the GIVEAWAY!

The good people at Oscar Wylee will be giving away one pair of their designer optical glasses to a lucky reader!

All you have to do is tell me if my photo is better than the models above.

Kidding. (Some ass kissing won’t hurt, really.)

Visit their website and tell me which pair you think would make you look like a celebrity/politician/reality TV star if you put it on (and which celebrity too!). Have fun!

Australian residents only. Competition closes 11 March, 2013 AEST. Winner must have a credit card, or can steal one from hubby like I did (debit cards not allowed).

:::::

Congratulations to Kitinn!! Thank you so much guys for joining the competition!

Put your orders through to Oscar Wylee. My private health cover refunded the WHOLE amount! Woohoo!!

What/Who is your EARLIEST memory of Sesame Street and why did it get stuck in your head after a gazillion years?

GLAD giveaway + some great lunch ideas

Mummy K giveaway products

Mums unite in the celebration of a finished lunch – a “real” finished lunch. Ones that are not binned before coming back home or exchanged for something else.

I’ve been lucky that MiniK has gotten over her food fussy phase. Or maybe it’s because of the more recent ultimatum I’ve imposed on our household – I’ll discuss this more later. Now she eats a lot of what I give her, especially her lunches.

I went through a Bento box phase too, but it wasn’t because of her. It was mainly for me, because I wanted a creative outlet. If you want to go in this direction, it is worth Googling for Bento boxes, or even buying an ebook (that’s what I did, very cheap and easy on the iPhone). I had to stop or at least tone it down a bit because the school said it was creating a lot of excitement during lunchtime, and delaying things (oops). They liked it though. I also tried this sushi sandwich but MiniK picked on the veggies. Sigh.

Anyway, as part of this whole school lunch thing, GLAD is giving away some really awesome products for one lucky winner.

3 x GLAD Baking Sheets

3 x GLAD Snap Lock reseal sandwich bags (pack of 50)

3 x GLAD Snap Lock Mini sandwich bags (60 pack).

3 x sandwich cutters

6 x edible markers

 Mummy K giveaway products

All you have to do is answer this question in 50 words or less:

What’s your best healthy school lunch idea? It can be anything you came up yourself or something you found online, or given by someone else. Or a link to your blog entry, or a blog entry you’ve seen somewhere.

Australian residents only. Competition finishes 15 February AEST.

The response to this competition has been overwhelming, thank you so much for joining and I’ll see what I can do with more comps for you guys!

Congrats to Stacey! And thank you all for your support!

My PIXMUM artwork

castle pixma

Canon launched their PIXMA printables website and Pixma printables campaign and, being the craft addict that I am, I decided to join.

There’s the PIXMUM program, which is basically using the printer to create DIY arts and crafts at home. You create stuff from scratch with your kids using the printables on the website. I know they probably meant for me to have some craft time with my little one, but after browsing through the printables on the website, my inner craft woman screamed for the more complex models.

At one point, I even wanted to make the model of the Russian church – not to say I won’t though. I got plenty of paper and glue left.

So for the first one, I picked the Merry go round picture Castle template. It’s too complicated to make with my 3 ½ year old MiniMe but it is educational and enjoyable to play with after Mummy’s done putting it together.

Canon has also partnered with Fox Studios for the upcoming release of Ice Age 4 (we love this series). I’ll be taking the whole family to watch it after we move houses next week (and if we ever get rid of this virus).

The funny thing is that I’ve wanted a new header with a 3D pop up effect and I think I can do this using one of the Pixma printables. Looking forward to making the Eiffel Tower soon!

And because I am so awesome, I even “deliberately” pasted the blimp upside down. Hubby says it looks like a plane ;)
